Pepper's kite was the best kite on the whole street. It was red, with a long blue tail. Then a gust of wind came along — and snatched it away!
1 -

The kite sailed over the rooftops, over the treetops, and landed on the little island in the middle of the big pond.
2 -

“I can't swim,” said Pepper. “I'm a cat.” “Then build a boat,” quacked Dot the duck. “I'll show you the way.”
3 -

Pepper found a cardboard box, a broom handle and her mum's striped tea towel. Snip, tape, tie! Now she had a boat with a sail.
4 -

They pushed off from the shore. The boat wobbled. Pepper wobbled. Dot paddled ahead and called, “Left a bit! Right a bit! Perfect!”
5 -

Halfway across, the wind blew hard. The striped sail puffed out, and the box boat zoomed across the water like a rocket.
6 -

Then — splash! — a wave sloshed over the side. The bottom of the box went soft and soggy. “Hurry!” cried Dot.
7 -

Pepper paddled with her paws as fast as she could. With a bump, the boat landed on the island sand. Just in time!
8 -

There was the kite, caught in a bush. Pepper untangled it very gently. Not a single rip! “We did it!” she cheered.
9 -

They flew the kite from the island all afternoon. How would they get home? That was an adventure for tomorrow.
