How KDP cover size is worked out
KDP prints your back cover, spine and front cover as one sheet, with 0.125 in of bleed on every outside edge.
- Spine width = page count × paper thickness (
0.002252in per page for white or standard color,0.002347for premium color,0.0025for cream). - Cover width = bleed + back + spine + front + bleed.
- Cover height = bleed + trim height + bleed.
- Keep cover text at least 0.125 in inside the trim line.

Common questions
How do I calculate a KDP paperback cover size?
Add the bleed, back cover width, spine width, front cover width and bleed for the width, and the bleed, trim height and bleed for the height. Bleed is 0.125 in. Spine width is the page count times the paper thickness.
What resolution should a KDP cover be?
At least 300 DPI at full size. The calculator shows the pixel dimensions for a 300 DPI cover file.
Can I put text on the spine?
Only if your book has more than 79 pages. Leave at least 0.0625 in between spine text and each spine edge.
Where does the barcode go?
If you don't add your own, KDP places a barcode in a 2 × 1.2 in white box at the lower right of the back cover. Keep that area clear.
Does the cover size change if I add pages?
Yes. The spine gets wider with every page, so the full cover gets wider too. Recalculate whenever the page count changes.
