KDP's AI content rules: what to disclose and when

KDP allows books made with AI, but it asks you to tell it when content was generated by an AI tool. The rule is short; applying it to real books is where people get confused.

Short answer

Tell KDP when your book contains AI-generated text, images or translations, including the cover. Content you created yourself and only polished with AI is “AI-assisted” and doesn't need disclosing. You're asked when you publish a new book, and again if you edit and republish one.

The rule in plain English

KDP's content guidelines split AI use into two kinds:

  • AI-generated: an AI tool created the actual content, whether text, images or a translation. It stays AI-generated even if you edited it heavily afterwards.
  • AI-assisted: you created the content yourself and used AI to edit, refine, error-check or brainstorm. KDP doesn't need to be told about this.

Images include the cover as well as interior art. You answer the question when you publish a new title, and again when you edit and republish an existing one.

Worked examples

SituationHow KDP would see itDisclose?
A picture book where AI wrote the story and drew the picturesAI-generated text and imagesYes
You wrote the story; AI drew the illustrationsAI-generated imagesYes
AI drafted a novel and you rewrote much of itAI-generated text (edits don't change this)Yes
You wrote the book and used AI to check grammar and tighten sentencesAI-assistedNo
You brainstormed ideas with AI, then wrote and drew everything yourselfAI-assistedNo
An AI tool translated your book into another languageAI-generated translationYes
A puzzle book where mazes come from a code generator and the cover from AIAI-generated cover imageYes, for the cover

When in doubt, ask whether a tool created the words or pictures, or only helped you improve words and pictures you made. If it created them, disclose.

Your responsibilities don't change

Disclosing AI use doesn't relax any other rule. KDP says publishers are responsible for checking that all AI-generated and AI-assisted content follows its content guidelines, including intellectual property rights. In practice:

  • Read every page. AI can produce odd details, repeated phrases or factual mistakes.
  • Don't imitate existing characters, brands or a living artist's recognisable work.
  • Make sure the description matches the book. KDP doesn't allow misleading descriptions.
  • Avoid near-duplicate books. KDP removes content it considers a poor customer experience.
  • Order a proof copy before you publish.

Title limits and review

KDP limits how many new titles you can create and submit each week, per format, and the limits reset every Sunday at midnight UTC. KDP doesn't publish a single fixed number on its help page, so plan launches as a steady schedule rather than a burst.

KDP reviews every book and may ask for more information before it goes on sale. If a title is removed, KDP tells you and you can appeal.

Copyright protection for purely AI-generated material differs between countries and is still developing. Your own selection, arrangement and rewriting of content can matter. If copyright protection is important to your plans, get advice for your country rather than relying on a general guide.

How Bookhatch handles it

Books made with Bookhatch contain AI-generated text and images, so you should answer yes to KDP's AI question for them. Bookhatch reminds you at export and includes a note in the listing file. Puzzles in activity books are generated by code, not by an AI model.

Frequently asked questions

Does KDP allow AI-generated books?

Yes. KDP accepts AI-generated content as long as you disclose it and the book follows the content guidelines.

Do I have to disclose AI if I edited the text a lot?

Yes. KDP says content created by an AI tool counts as AI-generated even if you applied substantial edits afterwards.

Do I need to disclose using AI for grammar checks?

No. Editing or refining content you created yourself is AI-assisted, which KDP doesn't need to be told about.

Does an AI-generated cover count?

Yes. KDP's definition of AI-generated images includes cover images as well as interior art.
