On market day, Wanjiru woke before the roosters. “Cucu! Cucu! Is it time?” Her grandmother laughed. “Almost. First, chai.”
1 -

They filled baskets with avocados, sweet bananas and bunches of sukuma wiki from Cucu's garden, and walked down the red road together.
2 -

The market was bursting with color. Mama Atieno sold bright cloth. Baba Musa sold shiny pots. Everyone called out, “Habari ya asubuhi!”
3 -

Wanjiru built the avocados into a perfect pyramid. “One, two, three…” she counted. “Moja, mbili, tatu…” Cucu counted along.
4 -

Then the sky went grey. Plip. Plop. PLOP! The rain came pouring down, drumming on the tin roofs like a hundred tiny drums.
5 -

Everyone hurried under the big blue tarpaulin. Pots, baskets, chickens and children all squeezed in together, dripping and giggling.
6 -

“What shall we do now?” asked Wanjiru. Cucu smiled and began to clap. Clap, clap, clap-clap. Then she began to sing an old market song.
7 -

Baba Musa tapped a pot like a drum. Mama Atieno sang along. Soon the whole market was singing, louder than the rain.
8 -

When the rain stopped, a rainbow stretched over the hills. And everyone who had sheltered together bought an avocado from Wanjiru's pyramid.
9 -

Walking home with empty baskets, Wanjiru held Cucu's hand. “Cucu, can it rain next market day too?” Cucu laughed all the way home.
